DIGITAL VALUE ENGINEERING

Hiroshi Okuda, Professor
Tatsunori Hara, Lecturer

[Abstract]

In digital value engineering, methodologies are studied to extract, express, accumulate and utilize various information as "digital value" in connection with the value chain of artifacts. The expression technique and the data management technique of the digital contents are investigated in order to promptly respond to use-environments and their needs. Also, customizing the information goods and the simulating a sense of values etc. are taken into account.

Recent Research Projects

1) Middleware for digital value creation

With the internet and the computer hardware as the information infrastructure, middleware for digital value creation enables the development of functionally multi-channeled simulation software, which can adapt various detailed needs. In addition to the conventional computation technologies, the middleware quantifies (models) the value from the viewpoint of those who get the benefit of engineering, and incorporates it into the simulation framework.

2) Hydrogen society simulation by the high-end and emergent computing

This topic is one of the concrete applications of the above-mentioned middleware. Taking the sense of care for the natural environments as a value into account, the hydrogen society creation process is simulated by constructing the energy network model, which is doubly equipped with an electric power system and a hydrogen pipeline. The amount of spread of a fuel cell, carbon-dioxide emissions and the amount of fossil fuel consumption, etc. are evaluated.

3) Study on customization of information goods with customer participation

Customer participatory design and assembly is a key issue to achieve more individualized and high-value added artiracts. As a case study in inbound tourism that have high heterogeneity and diversity of customers, we are currently working on development of a methodology to customize such information goods as tour planning for foreign tourists by means of the following: classifications of tourist behaviors, introduction of modular design, and interactive design with customer.
